1. Do I need to see a psychiatrist or a psychologist ?
Either will be able to help you to start with. However, if you suffer from a mental illness that is likely to require therapy with medicines, then it's best to consult a psychiatrist first. A psychologist may become involved in your treatment at a later stage.
2. How do I make an appointment ?
It is advisable that you discuss your problem with your doctor (GP) first. He/She will then make a referral to the psychiatrist (NHS or Private), outlining the main points of your problem(s). The GP may make the referral directly in which case we will contact you with an appointment or, you can contact us to make the appointment once you are in possession of the referral letter. A letter to your GP will follow your consultation.
3. Do I need to inform my GP?
It is best if you do. However, you can still make an appointment without a GP referral letter if you prefer. No correspondence will be sent to your doctor if it is your wish.
4. Who else is likely to know about my illness?
No-one. Your consultation(s) will be treated with the utmost confidentiality. No information will be shared with anybody (including your nearest relative) without your expressed consent. On the other hand, you may choose to bring another person with you to the consultation, a relative or a friend/advocate. You decide. It is always advisable that, where possible, another person accompanies you but it is not essential.
5. Do any medicines prescribed become addictive?
Not if prescribed under rigorous guidelines. You will be informed of the benefits and possible side effects of medicines before they are recommended. Regular reviews will have the advantage of advising you when to stop taking any medicine.
6. Do I need to take medicines for the rest of my life?
In most cases it is not necessary to take medicines for very long. However, certain mental illnesses may necessitate ongoing treatment for years if not for life. Modern treatments allow most patients to lead a normal life.
7. Will I be back to my 'old self' again after treatment?
Hopefully yes. Most mental illnesses respond very well to treatment. Combination of treatments may even be more helpful.
8. Can I be seen if I hold a Private Insurance?
Yes, but you must check with your insurer first.
